Imagine you are in the wild, open outdoors. What do you see? As an artist, I see a world of vibrant colors that can’t be reproduced perfectly. I see a sky that has a blue which pierces the eyes. Greens (provided that it’s a green time of year) that shine through with innumerable shades and colors. Even the ground has many different nuances of color; sometimes reddish, other times more brown. Trees show their individual trunks with purples, reds, yellows, creams, and greens emerging from their depths. Along with color, there are shapes and forms and certain smells that are all connected with the outdoor world. What does it all mean?
As the artist, Wassily Kandinsky said,”If the artist has outer and inner eyes for nature, nature rewards him by giving him inspiration.” In other words, nature is a place of inspiration for many artist and people in general. However, one must not only see it with their eyes, but also with their heart. For me, the natural world makes me think of the Maker of it all. The wisdom and power that went into each and every creation is unthinkable. God knew we would need color and all types of mysteries to explore. Imagine how boring life would be without it!
If you’re stuck in life, or stuck in your art work, then what you need is a good walk out in nature. Take a slow walk while you notice all the creations around you. Nature is also a connection to God because he reveals himself through it. If you ever wonder about life in general , go spend sometime in the woods. I love sitting in the woods as little birds, or squirrels rustle along. On occasion, perhaps a bear might even lumber by; which is not so far fetched here in North Carolina.
One of the reasons I love to paint animals is because of all the details on their faces and bodies. Have you ever noticed that bears all have different expressions on their faces? Once I started painting them, their features became so hilariously to me because I began to notice so much more about their character, especially the black bear. I’m sure this is true of all the different animals.
This is why when I’m indoors I love to have my art around me. It brings a connection into my indoor space like nothing else. That might seem a little overstated, but I don’t think so. I actually didn’t even realize how important it is to me until I had to remove all my art from my walls when preparing to move house. The emptiness that it brought was beyond explication. The house was not empty yet, just the walls, but it felt so much different. Art makes a difference.
